Vroom and Yetton's Contingency Model

Vroom and Yetton developed a contingency model of leadership based on two dimensions of a leader's decision making plus a consideration of a third:

  • Decision Quality
  • Decision Acceptance
  • Decision: Time Required to make it

Vroom and Yetton produced a model of five main leader decision making styles:

  • Autocratic
  • Consultative
  • Group

Vroom and Yetton suggest 7 decision making rules which protect the dimensions of decision making and help the leader choose the right style of a situation.

Use this topic to understand the rules in more detail and use them to help you assess your leadership style in a given situation.
