Michaud and Thoenig developed a matrix to examine strategic orientation.

The matrix illustrates 4 strategies that result from positioning the strength of internal or external pressures on the organisation (whether real or perceived) vs. the organisation's time frame for response - short or long term

It helps you examine your strategies and assess:

  • The orientation or style for each strategy
  • The merits of that orientation
  • Whether the perceptions and constraints that impact the strategy are real and accurate
  • Whether your responses to these constraints and the strategic style adopted is appropriate, effective and successful.

From this analysis you can decide if any action is required to improve strategic performance and/or change direction or strategic focus.
