Describing leadership styles

Blake and Mouton developed a grid for describing two behavioural leadership styles: The Managerial Grid ® in 1964.

This was further developed in the 1970's and 1980's. 

In 1991 Blake with McCanse republished the work as the Leadership Grid ®.

The grid relates to the Ohio and Michigan studies and the work of Likert in this area in that it compares behavioural styles across two dimensions:

• Concern for People
• Concern for Production

The result of the 'grids' is five basic leadership styles which represent different combinations and emphasis of the two dimensions. 

In the 1991 version of the Leadership Grid ® two more styles were added giving 7 in total, the:

• Impoverished management style
• Authority-compliance management style
• Country-club management style
• Middle-of-the-road management style
• Team management style
• Opportunistic management style
• Paternalistic management style

The grid takes the discussion away from either 'this way or that way' leadership, to one where approaches to people and production are combined.

Findings

The findings showed leaders had one dominant leadership style and one back up leadership style, but can move across the other styles depending on the situation.

The dominance of the leadership style is driven by:

• Personal history
• Personal beliefs and values
• Chance
• The nature of the organisation

This leadership grid has maintained its popularity over the years and is part of the Behavioural Styles Approach to leadership.

Use the grid to help you with your training and development as a leader and to form a view on 'What is Leadership?'.  

While the grid is simple in construct, it will help you focus on how you behave today and the dominant leadership style you adopt.

By using the grid, you will be able to identify differences in your leadership style and approach, and work to balance the focus on people and production more effectively.
