Named after Niccolo Machiavelli the 16th Century writer on power and manipulation,

Machiavellianism is the personality trait term given to someone who maintains a distance from their emotions and pragmatically justifies that the end justifies any means.

Machiavellianism and its influence on leadership and behaviour in the workplace became a popular source of study and discussion in the 1970's.

On the surface only!

People who exhibit Machiavellian characteristics and behaviours are said to be High-Mach and people at the other end of the scale Low-Mach.

At first glance some of the High-Mach characteristics seem the kinds of things you would expect to see in a leader. But they require deeper examination.

Learn some of these High-Mach characteristics of personality, that on the surface seem good until one remembers that the end justifies any means.  

High-Mach personalities are said to manipulate people and have no standards or ethics - this kind of behaviour is far from what people associate with great leadership today.

Low-Mach

Understanding Low Mach tendencies is also important in how a leader might behave for success.
